A new booklet unveiled at Global Gypsum outlines the potential for decarbonising gypsum-product manufacturing operations with biomass, as well as relevant technical and economic considerations

The Gypsum Industry Towards Climate Neutrality

Three years after unveiling the industry roadmap "Towards Climate Neutrality with Gypsum", Eurogypsum spoke at the Global Gypsum conference in Istanbul on 14th October 2026, to explore specific aspects of the gypsum industry's journey towards climate neutrality.

Taking stock of legislative evolutions since 2023, Alicja Szambelan (Senior Public Affairs Officer, Eurogypsum) presented the challenges and opportunities for the gypsum sector to decarbonise in the EU legislative framework.

Speaking again to the worldwide gypsum industry audience three years after the Chicago Global Gypsum conference, Eurogypsum's Secretary General Tristan Suffys insisted on the European gypsum sector's commitment to supporting the EU climate neutrality objective by 2050. "Lightweight construction solutions based on gypsum products play a crucial role in decarbonising Europe's built environment", he said. Whereas gypsum products typically only account for 1 to 3% of the total EU construction product manufacturing's CO2 emissions today, "the sector has also long been active at decarbonising its industrial operations", Suffys added.

A Role for Biomass

Energy efficiency improvements and electrification are often identified as the most promising opportunities to further reduce the gypsum industry's carbon footprint. However, renewable energy sources, such as biomass, can also play an important part in this journey. "Eurogypsum is committed to enabling knowledge exchange with all potential solution providers, such as the biomass sector today", Szambelan added.

Manolis Karampinis (Director for Business Development & Membership, Bioenergy Europe) joined Global Gypsum to present a new booklet produced by Bioenergy Europe for the gypsum industry. The document provides introductory information on the potential for the use of biomass in gypsum product manufacturing. It presents the different options available, as well as technical and economic considerations for a successful use of bioenergy.
